Dacia Spring: The cheapest electric is coming. We've already tested it!

Dacia Spring

The Dacia Spring is an extremely interesting car, because when it first hit the market in 2021, it made electric mobility much more accessible to many types of drivers, especially Portuguese drivers. This is the best-selling electric car in Portugal (for private individuals), and despite the fact that it is not a car ready for all types of use, it is incredible for short circuits or city trips with its autonomy of over 200 kilometers.

Well, in case you didn’t know, we’re going to have a new Dacia Spring model on the market very soon. We’ve already taken a look at it, and we’ve also driven it!

Therefore, since its launch, the Spring has been evolving, and has even received a more powerful engine (65hp) in 2023, always with the main objective of remaining the most affordable electric car on the market.

Now, keeping the same battery and the same engines, the Dacia Spring evolves as a more beautiful and more modern car, with a design more in keeping with the brand’s current identity, and of course, much more technology, whether focused on connectivity or on helping with driving.

Ultimately, the idea remains that the Spring moves away from the image of a “cheap” car, to position itself as a serious alternative in the electrified world.

The new Dacia Spring seems to be more of a car and less of a toy.

Design and Technology.

Design and Technology

The new Dacia Spring is now a cuter, more interesting car, all thanks to more robust lines, a Y-shaped LED light signature, and the removal of decorative elements that no longer make sense. It’s a car that looks and feels more aerodynamic.

Inside, we also have a lot of changes, and even a big improvement in the build quality, especially in the center console. However, of course, we continue to have a very Dacia philosophy, that is, an interior with hard plastics, visible screws, among many other things that we could say are details. But, Dacia is exactly this, cutting down on the less important things, to offer something cheaper but still incredible for everyday driving.

We now have a 7-inch digital instrument panel (Virtual Cockpit), as well as a 10-inch multimedia center on top models. (Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay support, standard).

There is also a V2L (Vehicle to Load) system, which basically allows you to use the car’s battery power to power other things. In the case of the Dacia event in Bordeaux, we drank a Nespresso coffee from a machine connected to the Spring. But, in a less “playful” example, you could go camping and power an electric grill, lights, etc. All from the Spring. Of course, there are safety modes to ensure that you don’t get stranded (without battery).

Space

Just like the previous model, the Spring is a kind of mini-SUV.

Space

So, even if it’s not a space-saver, it has to be practical in this area. That’s exactly why the Spring offers the best storage capacity in its category, with 308 liters in the trunk (1,004 liters with the rear seats folded down) and almost 33 additional liters in internal compartments

Vehicle interior

We also have the addition of smart accessories, to further optimize the vehicle’s interior space (such as Dacia’s YouClip system).

In terms of sheer size, it’s 3.70m long and has a turning circle of 4.8m. It’s not a car that’s obviously amazing in its performance or dynamics, but it’s very agile and easy to drive. In town, the steering is so light it almost feels like a feather.

Engine and Performance

The Spring is available with two engines, each with the same battery (28.6kWh). One with 45hp and the other with 65hp. However, as you can imagine, the focus is solely on energy efficiency. This is exactly why the new Spring weighs less than a ton, with the 65hp engine having a consumption of almost always less than 13.5 kWh/100 km. (The 45hp engine is slightly less efficient).

Note : The 65 hp/48 kW engine is available in the Expression and Extreme versions of the New Spring. While the 45 hp/33 kW engine is available in the entry-level Essential version.

Test Dacia Spring Electric Car

The Spring arrived to us with a range of 218 kilometers with the air conditioning on. An interesting figure, given that Dacia promises 225 kilometers with the battery at 100%. (However, as always, this figure will depend on your driving style. If you’re heavy-footed, the averages will increase, and like any car on the planet, consumption will increase).

That said, we did two trips, the first one lasting about 2 hours, and the second one lasting about 1 hour. The conclusion was always the same. A very interesting car for short trips, to go to work, pick up the kids from school, etc.

The autonomy is exactly what is described, and we now have lots of driving aids such as sensors, cameras, lane control system, speed sign monitoring so that you are not caught speeding, etc.

As we said above, this is not a dynamic or powerful car. However, it is still an electric car, and as such, it will always be a very agile car in traffic, especially when starting off.

In terms of comfort, there are clear improvements compared to the old model. However, if you are a tall person like me (1.90m), it could be a little more comfortable if the seat was a little further back, and the left footrest was a little bigger. Even so, for the purpose of the car, it is excellent.
